The Original Pancake House
Known for its Dutch Baby and pancakes, The Original Pancake House is a breakfast favorite. Though the pancakes are the focus, from a typical blueberry to bacon pancakes, the restaurant offers other equally delicious breakfast fare. For example, the restaurant’s omelettes alone are gigantic and range from flavors such as western to Irish to vegetarian. Open all week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., The Original Pancake House is a place to visit a least once.
“When you visit us for lunch or breakfast, you become part of the Ted’s family,” the Ted’s Restaurant website said. Set aside as a little piece of history, Birmingham breakfast wouldn’t be the same without Ted’s. Soul food, southern food or whatever you want to call it, everybody agrees on one thing: that it’s done right at Ted’s. Offering basic breakfast dishes such as eggs, pancakes and more, the loving service is just the cherry on top. Ted’s is open weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
True breakfast eaters come home to Over Easy. Self-described as a place for people who love breakfast, Over Easy utilizes fresh, organic ingredients to create morning masterpieces for its customers. The restaurant does offer lunch items as well, but breakfast steals the show on Over Easy’s menu. Featuring an entire section for just three egg omelettes, Over Easy doesn’t kid around. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed Mondays), Over Easy is a breakfast connoisseur’s paradise.
The Egg & I
Whether you’re craving benedicts, waffles, eggs, pancakes or even frittatas, The Egg & I has it. Breakfast for lunch is always available, though the restaurant does have a selection of soups, salads and sandwiches to choose from for lunch. With the idea of friendly people serving delicious food, The Egg & I won’t disappoint. The Egg & I recently changed management and is open weekdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and until 2:30 p.m. on weekends.
Shashy’s Baker & Fine Foods
As a creator of southern culture cuisine, Shashy’s leaves a lasting impression. The recipes come straight from Jimmy Shashy’s cookbook and the breakfast menu is simple to navigate. Though options look limited at first glance, Shashy’s provides breakfast foods from benedicts to omelettes to biscuits and more. The restaurant and bakery is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Given the wide range of food served at Shashy’s, breakfast will only be the meal that makes you come back for more.
Brunch is only served on the weekends, but that doesn’t stop Sinclair’s from having some of the best breakfast. The brunch and prices vary depending on which location is visited. In general, eggs are at the forefront of the brunch cuisine. Eggs tenderloin, eggs Sardou and crabbie eggs are just a few of the options available. Hours of operation vary as well, but whichever Sinclair’s is visited won’t change the brunch delight that awaits.
Another Broken Egg Cafe
Sitting right on the Black Warrior River, the Another Broken Egg Café serves up a variety of dishes, but most have one thing in common (if you guessed eggs, you’re right). Other breakfast and brunch items are available, such as Foster’s waffle, the Santa Fe Burger or even the Southern Crabstack. The café is open all week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The children’s menu is simplified and prices are reasonable, so there’s no reason not to roll out of bed and dig in.
All day breakfast is a staple at Bryant-Denny Stadium’s next-door neighbor. Rama Jama’s, while known as a busy after gameday spot, calms down in the offseason enough to provide a memorable breakfast. Surrounded by its Alabama football décor, a meal at Rama Jama’s is always special, but having breakfast just amplifies it. The All-American Platter, for example, comes with scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon and a fluffy biscuit – all the breakfast necessities. Rama Jama’s is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The mother of all Tuscaloosa breakfasts comes in the form of a Waysider breakfast. Known for the made from scratch biscuits and the early bird hours, Waysider breakfast is not for the weak of heart. The small but busy restaurant is open from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, from 5:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday and from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. The cozy atmosphere is unforgettable and makes the Waysider a Tuscaloosa breakfast staple.
