With several ranked teams going down to defeat this past weekend, this translated into a significant shakeup in the College Football Playoff Poll, with the third poll of the season being announced live on ESPN Tuesday night.
But in terms of the top of the poll, the Top 5 teams in the rankings remained status quo.
Dabo Swinney's undefeated Clemson Tigers remained at No. 1 in the poll after a 37-27 win over Syracuse Saturday. The Tigers are 10-0 and should have an easy time this coming weekend as they battle the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Some observers speculated that the 9-1 Alabama Crimson Tide might vault to the top spot after defeating a ranked Mississippi State team on the road 31-6 this past weekend, but Nick Saban's team remained No. 2 as it prepares for a home date with FCS member Charleston Southern Saturday.
Urban Meyer's 10-0 Ohio State team, the defending national champions, remained No. 3 after a 28-3 win at Illinois. The Buckeyes host No. 9 Michigan State this week, and Ohio State is currently a 13-point favorite over the Spartans.
Notre Dame remains in the No. 4 spot with its 9-1 record after having defeated Wake Forest 28-7, although some felt that undefeated Oklahoma State might move into that spot after defeating Iowa State or perhaps even Bob Stoops' 9-1 Oklahoma team, who was impressive in knocking off then-No. 6 Baylor on the road. Baylor fell to No. 10 following the loss to the Sooners.
Kirk Ferenz's 10-0 Iowa Hawkeyes, however, remained in the No. 5 spot while Mike Gundy's Cowboys moved into the No. 6 spot. Oklahoma holds the No. 7 spot.
Oklahoma State hosts Baylor this week while Oklahoma hosts TCU in major tests for both squads.
Stanford fell from No. 7 to No. 11 after falling to the Oregon Ducks, while Utah fell from No. 10 to No. 13 after falling in two overtimes to Arizona.
Other members of the Southeastern Conference included in the rankings besides Alabama are No. 8 Florida, Jim McElwain's SEC East champions, No. 15 LSU, who has made a precipitous fall from No. 2 the last two weeks after losing to Alabama and Arkansas consecutively and No. 22 Ole Miss.
The following is the complete Week 3 College Football Playoff Poll:
