All 3 Dune Movies, Ranked Worst To Best

The story and themes in Frank Herbert's Dune are famously hard to adapt. Because of this, some movies have been better than others.

Despite its qualities, Denis Villeneuve's sequel to his 2021 hit Dune is the best Dune film. The director's previous film sets the stage for Dune: Part Two.

1. Dune: Part Two (2024)

While new characters and places are necessary, action can replace exposition. As with the first film, Dune: Part Two is a sci-fi masterpiece that combines existential philosophy and breathtaking visuals.

Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film Dune: Part One established that Herbert's book could be adapted for the big screen, despite its differing story and style from David Lynch's.

2. Dune: Part One (2021)

For 155 minutes, Dune: Part One slowly establishes essential characters, rivalries, and motivations in Herbert's first half, unlike Lynch's film. Though less frenzied than Lynch's, the method pays off.

Despite its stunning vistas and standout passages, David Lynch's 1984 Dune is the weakest of the book's adaptations and indicative of its unwieldiness.

3. Dune (1984)

Lynch's Dune, a two-hour adaptation of Herbert's 400-page tale, lacks content. Lynch and the studio struggle to make sense of lore that, without exposition, becomes incomprehensible.
