Baked Hasselback Apples Recipe

Make these simple Baked Hasselback Apples for fall! Sweet apples with toasty spices make a delicious dessert!  


– 2 large apples, peeled, halved, and cored* – 1/4 cup (56g) unsalted butter, divided – 1/4 cup (50g) firmly packed light or dark brown sugar, divided – 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided – 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger – 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg – 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom – 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice – 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour – pinch of salt – 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (like pecans, walnuts, or hazelnuts) – 2 tablespoons rolled oat

Heat the oven to 400°F. Spray a 2-quart baking pan. Cut apples almost all the way through at 1/4-inch intervals with the cored side down.   

Step 1 


Leave 1/8 inch at the bottom. In the pan, place the apples cored down. Melt 1 tablespoon butter. Mix in 1 tablespoon brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.  

Step 2

Apply butter mixture to apples. Foil the pan. Bake 20 minutes. Let the pan cool for 10 minutes on a wire rack. Cube the cold, unsoftened butter.   

Step 3

Mix butter, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, flour, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, allspice, and salt with a pastry blender, fork, or fingers. Stir in nuts and oats.  

Step 4

Use two forks or butter knives to slightly fan the apple slices. Just gently separate them.  

Step 5

Take small amounts of topping mixture and spoon it over the apples. Push some mixture into the slices with a fork or butter knife.  

Step 6

Bake apples for 15–20 minutes until done but not soft. It should be hard to puncture them, yet soft underneath. Warm serve. Serve with chosen garnishes.
