For the syrup – 1 cup water – 3/4 cup granulated sugar – 3/4 cup honey – juice of 1 lemon – 1 cinnamon stick – 5 whole clove – 1 tablespoon vanilla extract For the baklava – 16 ounces chopped nut – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon – 16 ounces phyllo dough thawed – 1 & 1/4 cups salted butter melted

Put one sheet of phyllo dough in the baking dish and fold it in half. Spread butter on top. Fold seven more sheets of phyllo dough in half and place them in the baking dish.

Step 1

Brush more butter on top of each sheet as you go. The pieces might need to be spread out so that they cover the baking dish.

Step 2

Put ½ cup of the nut mixture on top of the phyllo in a round shape. Keep adding layers until you've used up all the phyllo and nuts.

Step 3

There will be a layer of phyllo on top at the end. Use a lot of butter to brush on. There may be extra butter, that's fine, we just want to make sure there's enough.

Step 4

To make a diamond shape, score through all of the layers. Along the length of the baking dish, you will make three lines that are aligned to each other.

Step 5

Then, you will make diagonal lines to make the diamonds. Put it in the oven and bake for 32 to 37 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Step 6

Spread the sauce right away on top of the hot baklava; it will sizzle. Leave the baking dish out at room temperature for four to six hours or overnight.

Step 7

It will be nice and crisp this way. Cut along the lines that were scored again, and serve right away.
