Easy Decorated Halloween Sugar Cookies Recipe

Our Halloween Sugar Cookies are easy to prepare, fun to decorate, and excellent for Halloween parties!  


For the cookies- – ½ cup unsalted butter softened – 2/3 cup granulated sugar – 1 large egg – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – 1 & ¾ cups all-purpose flour – ¼ teaspoon baking powder – 1 tablespoon cornstarch – ¼ teaspoon salt For the icing/decoration- – 2 & 1/2 cups powdered sugar – 2-3 tablespoons milk – Food colorings of your choice I used orange, green and black gel food coloring – Edible candy eyes optional


Prepare cookies by beating butter and sugar until smooth and creamy. Beat in the egg and vanilla. In a separate basin, mix flour, baking powder,

cornstarch, and salt. Fold dry ingredients into wet components to make a smooth dough. Hand-form the dough into a ball, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for 1 hour.  

Step 2

Not skip this step! Pre-heat the oven to 350°F and line two baking pans with parchment. Roll the dough to ¼” thickness and use Halloween cookie cutters to cut shapes. 

Step 3

Bake the cookie forms for 10 minutes on the prepared baking pans until the edges are brown. Let cool on a wire rack after 10 minutes on the baking sheets. It helps cookies finish cooking. 

Step 4

To make the icing, mix powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Thick enough to pipe but pourable. Mix a few drops of food coloring in several bowls to make different colors.  

Step 5

Pipe lines around each cookie with a narrow nozzle and piping bag. The pumpkin stem might be green and the remainder orange. All-white ghosts were chosen. To fill lines,

flood the middle with a broader nozzle. To thin the frosting, add a few drops of milk. If utilized, give ghosts edible eyes. Allow cookies to dry for 30 minutes before frosting again. 

Step 7

Piped pumpkin ridges on orange pumpkin icing. Make ghost mouths from black circles around their eyes. Before touching or stacking, let the cookies air-dry at room temperature for 6 hours or overnight.
