Simple Irish Brown Bread Recipe

Traditional soda bread Irish Brown Bread uses equal amounts whole wheat and white flour. Amazing flavor and texture, and easy to make!

– 2 cups whole wheat flour – 2 cups all purpose flour – 1 1/2 tsp baking soda – 3/4 tsp salt – 1 Tbsp brown sugar – 2 cups buttermilk



Heat the oven to 450F. Mix whole wheat, all-purpose, baking soda, salt, and brown sugar in a large basin.

Pour buttermilk into a well in the dry ingredients. Mix everything with a spoon or hands until a sticky dough forms. 

Step 3

If your dough is dry, add a little liquid. Put the dough on a lightly floured board and knead it 4-5 times until smoother and less sticky.

Step 4

Shape the dough into an 8-inch fat disk. Cut two 1/4"-deep X-shaped incisions into the bread top using a sharp knife. Transfer to baking sheet.

Step 5

After 15 minutes, lower the oven to 400F and bake for 15-20 more minutes. Domed, golden brown bread should sound hollow when struck on the bottom. Slice after cooling on a baking rack.
