The best opening weekend for a Kung Fu Panda movie in more than ten years was seen by Kung Fu Panda 4. Along with returning to voice the main character Po, Jack Black is back for the new movie, which comes eight years after the last one.
The evil witch Chameleon (Viola Davis) goes after the kung fu master as he trains his replacement to be the leader of the Valley of Peace. He goes after this new threat with the corsac fox Zhen (Awkwafina).
That's only $5 million less than the original movie's opening weekend of $60.2 million. That movie went on to make more than $600 million internationally, which was a good return on its $130 million budget.
If it does as well as the second movie, it could really soar to dizzying heights and make around $768 million, which would be the closest the series has ever been to $1 billion.
It remains to be seen how well it does in the coming weeks, but until The Garfield Movie comes out on May 24, it won't have any big animated competition, which could help it do well.
