Kung Fu Panda 4 Box Office Debuts With Franchise's Best Opening In 16 Years As Sequel Overthrows Dune 2

The first weekend of Kung Fu Panda 4 in theatres around the world was the second best for the whole series, beating Dune: Part Two to the top spot.

The best opening weekend for a Kung Fu Panda movie in more than ten years was seen by Kung Fu Panda 4. Along with returning to voice the main character Po, Jack Black is back for the new movie, which comes eight years after the last one.

The evil witch Chameleon (Viola Davis) goes after the kung fu master as he trains his replacement to be the leader of the Valley of Peace. He goes after this new threat with the corsac fox Zhen (Awkwafina).

The movie Kung Fu Panda 4 is expected to make $55 million in its first three days in theatres in the United States, according to Deadline.

This should make it the weekend's #1 movie, topping Dune: Part Two. It's also the four-film series' second-best opening weekend since 2008.

Kung Fu Panda 4's release after the longest layoff in the series' history didn't hurt it. It has made $55 million so far, and Monday's final results could increase that.

That's only $5 million less than the original movie's opening weekend of $60.2 million. That movie went on to make more than $600 million internationally, which was a good return on its $130 million budget.

In the end, all four Kung Fu Panda movies did well at the box office, but the new movie's opening is still near the top of the small group of top start grosses.

Even with a slower opening weekend, the second movie made more money. Kung Fu Panda 3 had the worst start in box office, but this enormous weekend could rectify it.

If it does as well as the previous movies, Kung Fu Panda 4 could easily make $633 million around the world, which is a lot more than its stated $85 million budget.

If it does as well as the second movie, it could really soar to dizzying heights and make around $768 million, which would be the closest the series has ever been to $1 billion.

It remains to be seen how well it does in the coming weeks, but until The Garfield Movie comes out on May 24, it won't have any big animated competition, which could help it do well.
