Legendary NFL Writer Chris Mortensen Dies at 72: On Sunday morning, Chris Mortensen, a journalist who had won multiple awards for his work covering the NFL, passed unexpectedly. At the age of 72, he turned 72.

In 1991, Mortensen made his debut as a broadcaster on ESPN. Since then, he has grown to become one of the most widely renowned and respected members of the NFL media.

His colleagues affectionately refer to him as “Mort.” He became renowned as a premier NFL insider throughout his decades-long work at ESPN, where he also became a contributor to Sunday Night Countdown, Monday Night Countdown, and SportsCenter. He was also noted for his intelligent commentary.

Mortensen disclosed in January 2016 that he had been diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer and that he would be taking a leave of absence before continuing his treatment. Less than a year after his diagnosis, he was able to successfully battle the disease and go back to work.
