Legendary NFL Writer Chris Mortensen Dies at 72: On Sunday morning, Chris Mortensen, a journalist who had won multiple awards for his work covering the NFL, passed unexpectedly. At the age of 72, he turned 72.

In 1991, Mortensen made his debut as a broadcaster on ESPN. Since then, he has grown to become one of the most widely renowned and respected members of the NFL media.

His colleagues affectionately refer to him as “Mort.” He became renowned as a premier NFL insider throughout his decades-long work at ESPN, where he also became a contributor to Sunday Night Countdown, Monday Night Countdown, and SportsCenter. He was also noted for his intelligent commentary.

• It was widely acknowledged that Mort was a pioneer in the field, and he was universally cherished for being a supportive and diligent teammate.
• He covered the National Football League with an exceptional level of talent and devotion, and he was at the top of his field for several decades.
• Colleagues and fans alike will miss him tremendously, and our thoughts and best wishes are with his family and friends at this time.

Mortensen disclosed in January 2016 that he had been diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer and that he would be taking a leave of absence before continuing his treatment. Less than a year after his diagnosis, he was able to successfully battle the disease and go back to work.

• Mortensen revealed in September 2023 that he would be parting ways with ESPN in order to concentrate on his “health, family, and faith.”
• This announcement came several years after Mortensen had taken a break from his work at ESPN.
• Before Mortensen began working for ESPN, he was a reporter for the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons in the 1980s.
• For his work, he was awarded the George Polk Award.
• Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Mortensen has been honoured with a total of 18 journalism prizes and has been nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes.
