Crispy Baked Chicken Wings Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ lbs. chicken wings, cut into drumettes and wingettes (I like to buy them already cut as “party wings”)
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder

  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ¾ tsp salt, divided
  • ¾ tsp pepper, divided

  • 2 cups apple cider
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar

  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

  • Apple slices, for garnish
  • Chopped chives or scallions, for garnish

Instructions

  • Set a wire rack on top of a foil-lined baking sheet and preheat the oven to 450°F. Lightly mist the rack with cooking spray.

  • Using paper towels, pat chicken wings, attempting to remove as much liquid as possible. Transfer to a large bowl.

  • Mix the paprika, baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper in a small bowl.

  • After dusting the chicken wings with the baking powder mixture, toss to coat.

  • Place wings in a semi-circle on the wire rack that has been prepared. For thirty minutes, bake. Take out of the oven and turn each wing over with tongs. Once again, bake the wings for a further 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are crispy and golden.

  • Place apple cider, apple cider vinegar, and honey in a medium saucepan and heat over medium-high heat while the wings bake. Bring to a boil after adding the cinnamon, remaining ¼ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp pepper. Once boiling, decrease heat to a simmer and cook until sauce slightly thickens and reduces, about 25 minutes.

  • After taking the chicken wings out of the oven, put them in a big bowl. Drizzle with apple cider sauce, then toss to coat. Transfer the wings to a dish and cover them with any leftover sauce from the bowl. Add apple slices and scallions or chives on top.

Tips for making baked chicken wings

  • If you can locate party style wings, buy them. The wingettes and drumettes are party style wings that come pre-cut, saving you a ton of time. I nearly always use party wings since I don’t enjoy chopping the wings apart myself.

  • Before adding the seasonings, pat the chicken wings dry as much as possible with paper towels. Any excess water will prevent the wing from crisping up.

  • Before baking, coat the wings with baking powder to help extract moisture and crisp them up.

  • Never place wings directly on a baking sheet; always place them on a baking rack. Better ventilation will come from this, and the wings will get crispier.

  • Vary the sauces and seasonings. Once you master the art of baking chicken wings, you may experiment with different sauces and spices to add some variation to your meals.

  • These apple cider chicken wings have quickly become my new favorite—I may say that about every new chicken wing recipe I try!

  • The sauce, which is slightly counterbalanced by the paprika and black pepper, has just the right amount of sweetness and fall flavor, and the wings are delightfully crispy.
